“Threads of Magic and Memory:” an Emotional Choose Your Own Adventure Game

(Wanna skip the blurb and play the game? Go ahead and click here!)

Normally, I write a blog post every other week, exploring some aspect of writing or storytelling. I’ve been doing it for the last… well, I’m not quite sure how long, at this point.

Today, though, I’m giving you something different. A friend and I spent a bit of our free time the last several weeks polishing up a text-based “choose your own adventure” interactive fiction game I wrote some time ago. Yesterday, we finally got it to a working, playable, and probably final form!

“Threads of Magic and Memory” is, as mentioned, a “choose your own adventure” style interactive fiction game developed in Twine. It follows an older soldier with a complex past as she travels deep into a mind-warping dungeon in the hopes of forgetting her history. You’ll explore a dungeon that bends the rules of reality, use magic built of threads that weave through the air, waiting to be woven and played, and meet a small cast of engaging characters. How long the game takes will be up to your reading speed and the choices you make, but it will probably be less than a half hour.

Ready to give it a go? Well, click on through and get started!

Update: I’ve now also posted a Q&A article about the game on my website. It’s an interview with Chad Finch that should serve as a good intro to game writing for anyone interested in doing it, with some theory to boot. Check it out here.

Update: The game now has an Itch.io page! You can find it here!
